Faith McKenna Otrey
Short Bio --- Faith and Abri have been best friends since childhood. Our fathers were traveling master craft masonry builders moving from place to place, wherever the work took them. We were born in England but as teenagers eventually ended up in France because that was where the work took them. We never seemed to have a true home as most call home since we were always on the move. The work our fathers landed when we made our way into France was building the addition to the King’s castle. What a cue that was for them. Being young girls, we were so excited to be able to witness all the pageantry of the court while there. My mother wasn’t still living as she had died from an awful disease while I was young, leaving my father and me to make it on our own. It was nice having a girl friend to spend time with growing up. While our father’s were working on the addition, one of the original walls where the castle entrance was located, which they had to merge the new wall into, fell just as the King and Queen were leaving the castle for a walk in their woods which they liked to do daily. Our father’s were in the right place at the right time, saw what was happening and managed to pull both to safety at the exact moment as to save both their lives. They didn’t have so much as a scratch but it could have been far worse. The royal family was so grateful they brought all of us into the castle to live and even Knighted our fathers so that they could then be full-time royal guards for the King and Queen. Since our fathers were now Knights, we got to become Ladies-in-Waiting for the Queen. Since we were to spend so much time with the Queen and Princess, we were trained as guardswomen to protect them without being obvious that we were their guards as well as companions. While living in the castle, there was a Knight, Sir Stephan [Stephan is pronounced Stefan] Otrey (again, SP?). When he asked me to marry him, I said yes and we became a team guarding the King, Queen and Princess. Abri also ended up marrying Sir Fredrick [Fredreek] __last name__. They also ended up being a team guarding the royal family too. While Abri and I were the Queen’s and Princess’ guards, at one point when we were not on duty the Princess vanished. We weren’t sure if she had run away or had been kidnapped but Abri and I were assigned to go and find her. While we were searching, tragedy struck at the castle and our husbands, Stephan & Fredrick, were killed by evil men while protecting the King. Thankfully for us, they did keep the King safe prior to dying of their wounds. Now we are widows, searching for our husbands’ killers while also searching for the Princess. We are trying to figure out in our hearts if we want revenge, justice or to forgive their killers. As God fearing women, we know what we should want but the loss has been great and we are torn. The King, being Catholic, would never allow us to guard the Queen and Princess if he had known that we were really Protestant. So for us, this must remain our secret lest we end up with our husbands before our time. |
